The Warwick Valley High School art department's annual Newspaper Fashion Show dazzled audiences again, transforming the auditorium into a whimsical world inspired by thjis year's theme, The Mad Hatter!

Under the guidance of WVHS art teacher Kristen Spano, students rose to the challenge with innovative designs that reimagined the world of Alice in Wonderland through wearable art using newspaper as their primary "fabric," along with playing cards and other creative materials.

“This year’s theme has, by far, been my absolute favorite, as students truly challenged themselves to push the boundaries of wearable art,” said Ms. Spano. “By manipulating paper, incorporating playing cards, and designing one-of-a-kind hats, they successfully brought their spectacular, avant-garde visions to life.”

Breathtaking garments by dozens of designers were walked down the runway, inspired by Lewis Carroll's popular characters: Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, and, of course, the Mad Hatter. Each piece showcased an astonishing level of craftsmanship, from hand-glued jewels to realistic paper roses. Some students meticulously attached hundreds of individual embellishments, while others sculpted elaborate hats and layered intricate paper designs for dramatic floral effects.

“Stepping out onto a runway to perform in front of a crowd of peers is no easy ask, but our students rose to the occasion and did an outstanding job,” Ms. Spano added. “Congratulations to all of our designers and models on a truly unforgettable showcase!”

The Newspaper Fashion Show continues to be a highlight of the Warwick Valley calendar, as demonstrated by the large and loud crowd of student supporters. There were also plenty of faculty and administrators, family and friends on hand to celebrate student creativity, teamwork, and the transformative power of art in education.
