Class of `25 alum visits Wildcat Press, now Associate News Editor of her college paper

Brenna Belasco, a proud 2025 graduate of Warwick Valley High School and former Managing Editor of The Wildcat Press, made a special return to her alma mater on June 12. Now a rising sophomore at Fairfield University, Brenna serves as the Associate News Editor for The Fairfield Mirror, the university’s student-run newspaper.

"Brenna has stayed in touch since September, and it’s been genuinely exciting to watch her college writing career take off," said WVHS English and journalism Teacher Carrie-Lynn Taylor. "I remember eagerly reading her first above‑the‑fold piece, and now she’s already secured a Head Section Editor role for next year!" 

Ms. Taylor was delighted to have Brenna meet with current journalism students to share her experiences in collegiate level journalism. During her visit, Brenna spoke about the fast-paced environment of weekly editorial meetings, the challenges and excitement of on-site reporting, and the pressure of late-night production deadlines. Brenna also highlighted her recent achievements, including winning awards and earning a stipend for her outstanding contributions to the newspaper.

"My time at the Wildcat Press built the foundation for my reporting and editing, and helped me realize my passion for journalism," Brenna told the class. She added that her experience being back in the classroom "truly solidified the importance of the work that [journalists] do and the value of student journalism." 

As Ms. taylor mentioned, Brenna is set to become the Head Editor for The Fairfield Mirror news section next year!

"Two promotions in one year is an impressive rise for a freshman who started as a staff writer," said a proud Ms. Taylor. "Brenna's hard work is clearly paying off, and I can’t wait to see what she does next."

Brenna's visit was an engaging presentation and conversation that offered students both practical advice and an inspiring glimpse into what awaits them in the world of college journalism. As she wrapped up her talk, Brenna gave some sound advice to aspiring journliasm students, but which can be applied just about anywhere.     

"Embrace opportunities, work collaboratively, and stay curious," she encouraged them.
